LED Lighting System Design

To design a system that works, a comprehensive study must be undertaken of your specific lighting application. For example if a LED lighting system is being designed for mobile plant, we need to look at an isometric view of the machine. This will show the visibility projection from the operator’s position in overall, side, if applicable, lower window and finally the ground view (see figures 1, 2, 3, 4) This is paramount in the design of a high quality LED lighting system.

Electricity Load Requirement. Other factors to consider are the power requirements of the new system, if more lights are being added what is the total load (Watts/Amps) required for the new system. Are you converting from AC to DC, if so then what DC generator system will you rely on. Is the original cable capable of carrying heavier loads. If converting from HID to LED, the concept of less load on the system is misconstrued, generally more lights mean more load. More load means larger DC generation whatever the source. The Lighting System should not use more than 50% of the total output. Unless specifically designed to do so

Once the isometric views have been analysed, we determine the correct lux (LUX=the amount of visible light required on the ground or operational surface) required to carry out the specific operational process required of the machine, with the emphasis on safety and productivity.

Measurement of the operational area are critical for this phase of the design process

Once the LUX levels have been determined, for the operational area, Peak Lighting will propose an existing LED Luminaire from our extensive range or if it’s a speciality application we can design a new product from the ground up. It is likely we will have an existing technology in most cases to suit your application.

Location & Mounting

Equally important, is the location and mounting design of the new LED lighting. Peak offers a complete bracket design programme to ensure a retrofit from older existing technology or a new install is simple and cost effective.

Once the location is selected, (based on the initial visibility projection study and after the desired Lux levels can be provided from the selected LED fitting), we look at existing mounting plates if applicable, if not we design new mounting plates.

The placement to achieve those readings is paramount and compromises should not be made.


Due to the high quality , of Peak Luminaires, high reliability and performance is guaranteed, often exceeding 50,000 hours of service, meaning no shutdowns and no bulb replacements.

Interior LED Light Solutions

Pre-Installation Light Study

All Peak Industrial LED luminaires are tested in a NATA Certified light laboratory. From this test we gain the IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) file. We produce photometric light studies like the two examples shown.

We determine the true performance of the LED light on the ground (LUX) allowing us to offer our products with confidence.

The pre-installation light study allows us to fine tune the lighting system before installation and removes any guesswork from this process. Important issues such as number of lights, location and light mounting angle from the ground can be confirmed during a light study so installation becomes simple and successful first time.

Post Installation Light Study

Once operational, we perform on ground LUX readings and provide those readings to the Lighting Engineer for comparison to the pre installation test described above.

On large machinery such as Electric or Hydraulic Shovels, Excavators and Draglines, interior lighting is equally important. With the client providing a “Clean” schematic of the interior spaces, Peak Lighting can provide a lighting study based on dimensions and lux levels required in the various locations. The availability of leading LED technology means Peak Lighting can and will exceed all safety and production standards, providing internal light levels previously unheard of in this type of machine.

The examples shown highlight a before and after image of a clean “house” schematic and another with a light study completed outlining the locations and lux levels achieved. In Australia, minimum lightings tandards for areas such as the machine house, electrical room and the lube room are at 100 Lux. Peak can provide up to 400 Lux or more. Making these areas safer and more productive. Similar levels can be achieved in walkways and utility rooms. Internal areas can have specific solutions applied ensuring the client gets light exactly where it is required with minimum shadowing and dark spots
